Bill- I finally read the Forbes article by George Gilder. Basically, it was an update to his more detailed research from the past which explains why you may have been "lost as to what he is speaking about". The article was scattered with a few ideas of technologies that are expected to increase bandwidth.

A few of his points I picked up from the article:
-One guy from WorldCom says that "He's up against the kilofold wall, a thousandfold rise in network traffic every 3 years. Meanwhile, routers and switches are creeping forward at the molasses pace of Moore's Law. Bandwidth will be scarce and expensive".
-One guy that heads an Advanced REsearch Project Agency terabit project for GTE's BBN and Cisco System can offer fast routers and switches, but the VP from Qwest is "totally funked by talk of mere millions of packets per second". He says "We have a revolution going here" "We have 48 fibers running OC-192--that's 10gps and each fiber can carry 8 - 16 WDM. "We have no time for dinosaurs and museums around here".
I translate that to mean that large telco's are disappointed that infrastructure providers like CSCO have been slow to keep up with the rapidly increasing bandwidth demands. Their technology simply hasn't kept up. The only technology that can meet their needs is DWDM, and they don't have it.... (But Osicom does)
-Both the guy from Qwest and WCOM agree that bandwidth is growing at least 3 times Moore's Law.

George is a futurist writer. I admire his writings and he has given some great ideas in the past. It might help if you read some of his prior articles which can be found by typing "gilder" in the search box at www.forbes.com
