Style,

Interesting post. I have a number of questions however I'll keep it to one...perhaps stupid question.

The writers of the article draw analogies between Compaq and Dell becoming distributors of hardware rather than manufactures. This of course has a significant impact on margins. The writers contention is that that same thing will happen with Cisco's technology. There certainly is evidence that with ASIC technology that many functions can be built right into silicon, but my question then becomes - what happens to IOS? Isn't IOS much like MSFT's OS is to computers. It's not enough to have the hardware, you need the software to make the pup go. It's my belief that CSCO, rather than becoming a distributor as the article eludes to, becomes more software focused - perhaps even the MSFT of networking. You can say that IOS is proprietary, but in the end it is the predominant networking OS in networks today. Isn't this how MSFT gained dominance. Moreover, common networking OS's are even more critical the client OS's since networking MUST talk whereas one can have a non-networked client and not have to worry about having a unique OS and unique applications that aren't compatitble. The paradigm is completely the opposite in networking.

It's my opinion that the aritcle loses sight of this very critical fact. What do you think?
