56kbps Modems to Take Center Stage in Late '98
February 19, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- CIS Technology Inc. and Asia Sun (Taiwan) Inc., the two
largest modem makers in Taiwan, said 56kbps modems will become the mainstream
products in the modem market in the second half of 1998.
CIS Technology announced an annual output target of 6 million units for 1998, and Asia Sun,
4.8 million units.

In 1997, CIS Technology manufactured 4 million modems, making it the largest modem
producer in the world. The company currently enjoys a 10 percent share of the global market,
and the new annual target of 6 million units is expected to help boost this figure to 12
percent in 1998.

The 56kbps model now accounts for one-half of the company's total modem output.

Asia Sun expects to increase its annual output from 4.7 million to 4.8 million units in 1998.
The company plans to launch a new 56kbps modem at the Hannover Computer Expo in
March, and it expects to receive NT$300 million (US$9 million) to NT$500 million worth of
orders for cable modems in 1998.

New products such as the double modem, which requires two telephone lines, are currently
under development, according to the company.
