As far as I can tell, the brief clip of Vance that was posted is not useful in addressing the question at hand because we cannot ascertain surrounding context.

The article, however, made it analytically clear that Vance's position is that juggling husbands may ameliorate one kid's problem while leaving another kid with the same or worse problem after a change in spouses has occurred. So, you end up with not one damaged child, but two or more.

And Vance is correct -- his argument was not in defense of the violence; it was simply a statement of fact that divorces simply rejiggers the problem, it does not solve it and likely ends in more violence overall.

I believe his is likely eyewitness testimony, so it is more credible than inferences draw from the question.
