thread, now that dell met their cost drop target by feb 98. they will continue to sell good.
the percentages quoted in the article are in theory and not real numbers.
in fact dell's price and cpq's are about the same.
the fact is even if dell was 1-3% higher a Director on MIS isn't going to switch to anohter pc company. We will mix dell and cpq..but if I was buying dells I'm not going to change every week based on price.
the losers are the 3rd and 2nd tier. as they fall out, dell and cpq will get even more pc share.
this is why dell's servers are only 11% on their biz and it's their low end servers. VP's of I/S aren't going to mix dell and cpq servers
based on price changes every week.
cpq has the high end locked up.. and the tandem and dec purchase locks up even more.
But, dell still will do fantastic this yr. Plus, overseas we may get compnaies standardizing on dell servers.
Their next goal is by Aug 98 show they can provide margin support in the consultancy area(service etc.)
The street isn't going to let them run all yr. with margins declining.
I think they pull it out by aug98.
as 1998 unfolds count on dell and cpq killing the competiton and getting 4 times their share.
don't be worried about articles that are nothing but meaningless theory.

Also, don't blast me when through the yr. I might point out weaknesses that cpq or dell might need to sure up....
remember, I've never said sell dell or cpq.
in fact even during the crash I told everyone to just sit tight.
