My view is that if this had happen during Andy Grove's tenure, he would've told the team to screw foundry, datacenter, and whatever other pet projects they have going, and focus on just one thing. And that one thing is flawless execution and delivery of Lunar Lake (the upcoming Intel Flagship AI mobile processor chip).
IMO, Intel's reputation as a PC cpu manufacturer depends on this one chip (after they messed up the most recent two cpu releases, something that would have been unimaginable even a few years ago). Intel is in a fight to defend its bread & butter product, the core PC cpu, and prevent market share from further going over to AMD and even new comers like QCOM.
So, if I were an investor in Intel or thinking about investing in the company, I'd closely watch for Lunar Lake performance numbers. This new Intel chip has every technical advantage one can imagine over AMD's Strix in terms of packaging (w/ system memory on chip), advance node for logic tiles (leveraging TSMC), 40% lower power consumption, and a completely redesigned compute/performance cores. Therefore, given these very advance and expensive design and manufacturing changes, if the chip doesn't perform better than AMD's chip in benchmarks, then it's a game over for Intel, imo.
I sincerely hope that Intel will deliver on Lunar Lake and recover from their recent missteps.
QTI PS: Thanks SQ for the mention. I do stop by here, usually on Fridays, when I normally deliver my weekly momentum charts to Chowder :). |
