Rarebird, But this election will ultimately be decided in regard to policy issues and how it has affected the working class. Without going into too much detail, I think most independents will end up voting for the status quo. Although Trump is trusted more to handle the economy better than Brandon or Harris, many voters will think that Harris will be "good enough."
And I already see how Harris is "playing it safe." She's repositioned herself as a "moderate" after four years of wokeness. Whether that matters or not is anyone's guess.
The bottom line, though, is that we aren't in a recession and probably won't be for the foreseeable future. Inflation is finally under control, and people are adjusting to the "new normal."
Hence most independents will want to avoid rocking the boat.
What's up with you? You hardly discuss substantive policy issues anymore and how it affects and has affected the lives of most Americans. We can go back to those discussions if you want.
But that only underscores what a dumbass Trump turned out to be last week.
First of all, Trump NEVER liked having substantive discussions over policy. He's always about riling up populist anger. He's always portraying himself as a Jesus-like figure who will fix everything with his mere presence in the White House.
Second, Trump had a chance with Project 2025 to take certain parts of it that he likes, disagree with parts that he doesn't like, and portray it as a focal point for good discussion over policy. Instead he tries desperately to disavow it, as if anyone is buying the act.
Finally, and this is the most important, Trump himself transformed this campaign into one of race. This is perhaps one of his most dumbass moments in the history of his political career, right up there with the January 6th insurrection.
He tried to pre-emptively turn the issue of identity politics back onto Harris and portray her as a "phony," a "chameleon," an opportunist who fakes being one race or another out of political convenience.
But like PooTin's three-day war of choice, Trump's attack backfired spectacularly.
Now Harris will gain points on the board for being the multi-racial crusader against a tired old white supremacist. And that gain will be irreversible.
Personally, I don't think Trump will ever recover from his gaffe. He's too stubborn, and he's surrounded with a HUGE crowd of sycophants who will NEVER tell him things he doesn't like to hear.
Bottom line that Trump himself is utterly incapable of having any discussions on policy. (Same with Harris, but I believe she is capable of learning. Plus there's still a chance the prosecutor in her will once again emerge.)
