jm, has bobo ever suggested selling one's portfolio?

With the possible exception of 1987 there hasn't been a reason to sell one's portfolio and the risk has been in not being in equities. He has steered a steady course and I still own some funds he recommended in the eighties, which means that they have compounded without a tax interruption.

In addition, after 1987 he revised his model to hopefully better predict a bear. If my memory serves me correct he was big in bonds at this time and I was the recipient of some of this good advise which brought me annualized double digit gains with little capital risk. Only time will tell if he will help us avoid the next bear, but as far as I'm concerned he has a very good (near perfect) record. He often states that nothing is for sure in investing.

One last point. I hope your use of "bobo" wasn't meant to be derogatory towards him. A lot of us owe him quite a bit for his excellent advise.
