Today's per trade stats + Why Mutual Funds don't care about the taxes you pay.
Today was interesting. Till Noon - the largest block was 5000 shares or less. The daily pattern of unloading 10,000 shares every hour was absent. (Was some trader away from his desk :-) ?). In any case, there was a run up and then sure enough someone started selling larger blocks. Here are some stats through out teh day when large blocks were unloaded. Anyone who has bought and sold thousands of shares at a time knows that often a big block is broken into pieces by the MM/Broker. So - these are not necessarily indicative.
Also- mutual funds are measured by pre-tax return and the taxes are passed off to fund holders - so they're not that worried about 20% vs 28% tax returns.
Another key point that needs to be discussed is the large oustanding April Call positions that are deep in the money. There are almost 10 Million Dollars riding on it (5000 calls * 20 dollars per share * 100 shares per call). So whoever sold those calls is pretty darned sure of either buying it cheaply or has already bought shares to deliver or has a straddle of some sort. My bet is that these calls are sold by some institution that plans to impact the stock price as April Expirations approach or before. They cannot afford to have the price run up in the face of earnings in April - unless they're covered already. Any options studs who want to comment ?
Today was a strong finish again. In spite of what BankCeo will say.
