Wow, $300K is enough to make me pause. You and Chowder have slightly different approaches. I was thinking, for a one time event, it might make sense to cannibalize the principle slightly given that you probably have the excess already saved up. It could be an easier approach than trying to factor up the cashflow to nosebleed levels. I see the merit in Chowder's thinking as well. That is why we appreciate you both contributing to this discussion. A reasonable solution might be somewhere in the middle.

I know extraordinary expenses can crop up. I have 3 college educated kids that did present some burden during the undergrad years. Then our otherwise great 12 years old Subaru Outback had a transmission problem. Buying a $43K Honda CRV hybrid replacement, during the Covid Epidemic, was a surprise expense. Things happen.

In my opinion it makes sense to have a bucket of assets that can be easily/safely converted to cash at any time.
