KY is mostly Appalachia, a unique subregion with some passing similarities to the Midwest, but much more related to WV and southwest VA. The "decent" English colonists all swarmed to Ohio to settle when they could, leaving the latecomer Scots and Irish to go fill these weird little valleys tucked away over the mountains from everywhere else. Those first settlers had no protection against the natives except the musket in the corner for a very long time. That really shaped their mentality.

Real Midwest is flat, open fields that stretch so far that your mind goes numb. If it weren't for the Mississippi, people might not have settled there until much, much later. The Scandinavians seemed to like it, coming from a flat, cold world themselves in many ways.
