| | | How did George Washington's name become such a well known and popular household name in the colonies even before the 1776 revolution ever began???
Here's how that happened...
The people who lived in the colonies at that time still considered themselves to be British subjects...
But, the British people living in England at that time looked upon those living in the colonies as somewhat "less than" British since they left England to live elsewhere...
George Washington was a uniformed officer in the British Army while living in the colonies, he had the rank of colonel, or as we find out so it all seemed...
One day a lieutenant in the British Army gave George Washington an order and Washington immediately told the lieutenant that a lieutenant cannot give orders to a colonel...
The lieutenant reported this insubordination to general Robert Dinwiddie who was the commander of the British forces in the colonies and was headquartered in Philadelphia...
General Dinwiddie sent a request for George Washington to report to the general's office to answer to these charges...
Washington reported to the general's office and the general asked Washington to explain himself...
Washington told the general that a lieutenant cannot give orders to a higher rank and that he was a colonel...
The general then told Washington that all the military officers who reside in the colonies do not out rank even a British lieutenant genuinely serving in the British Army...
Washington returned to his temporary quarters, removed his uniform, then returned to the general's office and handed in his uniform, telling the general if he's not what he appears to be then he will not pretend to be anything other than who he really is...
Washington handed the general the uniform and walked out of the office...
The general was shocked and told Washington that he valued Washington's knowledge of military strategy...
Washington replied, "It's too late now, you should have thought of that before," and Washington walked out of the general's office and returned home to Valley Forge...
Several months passed and the French army was already entering the western Ohio Valley and recruiting, basically tricking, the American Indians who lived there into joining the French in "defending the Indian homeland against the British," as it was sold convincingly to the Indians living there...
General Dinwiddie began to mobilize his troops and sent a query to George Washington asking him to join him in the fight by then called the French and Indian War, Dinwiddie knew that George Washington was a very smart military strategist and would know how to move the troops accordingly...
George Washington accepted the invitation and joined Dinwiddie in the fight against the French...
George Washington told Dinwiddie that attacking the French head on would be a mistake because the Indians would then be able to attack the flanks and kill the British troops...
The general ignored that advice and attacked head on, Dinwiddie was shot several times and fell off his horse and was on the ground bleeding out, several of the top British officers were surrounding the general, one of the officers asked the general who he wanted to take over the command...
Dinwiddie said he wanted George Washington to take over the command and lead the fight against the French, all the British officer were shocked but they all obeyed the general's words and George Washington led the British on to beat the French, the French and Indian War was over that quickly...
Word traveled very quickly all throughout the colonies that "one of our very own" someone named George Washington led the British forces to a victory over the French invasion and saved the colonies...
George Washington's name very quickly became a household name as the colonists very proudly proclaimed, "one of our own living right here in the colonies led the entire British army to a victory over the invading French."
George Washington was a celebrity and a great American hero who led the British to defeat the French...
Who else would the colonies choose to lead the revolutionary army against the British in 1776???
