Thanks for the reply, I will check out your mentioned Apple community discussions on iPadOS 17. The iPads 7 and 9 were updated to ipadOS 17 by an over the air wi-fi update.

Possibly Apple will release an update to ipadOS 17 if that’s the cause of the Mac iTunes sync problem.

I will try updating the Mac from Sierra to High Sierra soon and alternately maybe that would fix the iTunes sync problem. Also maybe High Sierra would fix the Mac Safari issues that have been happening, more and more websites (including SI) don’t work with Sierra Safari but they work with FireFox. I have just one important task to do on this computer (a tax return) so I will do that before attempting High Sierra, just in case High Sierra makes the situation worse.

New Mac computer purchase is overdue, I am fortunate that this one has lasted almost 13 years and the issues might still be fixable.
