Off Topic-kind of> Anyone do research on Alcatel?

Alcatel has its hands in several Loral projects and vice versa. Information I have is that Alcatel is France's largest industrial company. They have basically shed themselves or are in the process shedding themselves of their non-telecom holdings. It seems to me that if Loral is participating in the satellite age, that Alcatel should equally share. It has SkyBridge starting in 2001, is partner with Loral in Cyberstar, provides equipment for Globalstar, is in this new venture with Loral Europe*star.

Had big time losses a few years ago and is finishing a restructuring. They were profitable in 1997 and average estimated US EPS for 1998 is $1.55. Trade on the NYSE under ALA. They are ADR's and I believe 5 shares of ADRS for 1 share of stock. Market cap is about $20 billion, with 158 million actual shares outstanding (about half of Loral's). Average ADR's traded per day are about 200,000. They do pay a dividend too.

Anyone look seriously at investing in them. Comments are appreciated.
