R.D., Short against the box is not an option now with the new tax laws. This does not prevent a person from shorting a stock that he or she is long on. My theory is that I don't want to sell my "long term hold" position, so, I want to short an equal amount of stock and cover the short for a profit if it goes down. If it continues up, I am going up with it, dollar for dollar, with my "long term hold". If it was obvious that it was not going to retreat, I would have to cover the short for the loss, and sell my long position for a dollar neutral transaction.

Example: I have 400 of HWP at $50
It goes up to $68
___

$18 x 400 = $ 7200

I short 400 at $68
It goes back to its usual $61
___

$ 7 x 400 = $ 2800

I did not realize the $ 7,200 because I did not sell my long position.

I did realize the $ 2,800 because I covered at $ 61.

Sound Good? DWW II
