The Fourth Industrial Revolution and digitization will transform Africa into a global powerhouse

Editor's note:Below is Chapter 5 of the Foresight Africa 2020 report, which explores six overarching themes that provide opportunities for Africa to overcome its obstacles and spur inclusive growth. Download the paper to see the contributing viewpoints from high-level policymakers and other Africa experts.

By 2030, the continent could achieve rough parity with the rest of the world when three quarters of Africans are projected to become internet users. The economic potential is enormous: Mobile technologies alone have already generated 1.7 million jobs and contribute $144 billion to the continent’s economy, or roughly 8.5% of GDP. Nathaniel Allen writes for the Brookings Institution.

Between 2013 and 2023, operators invested over US$70 billion in building mobile infrastructure to connect 85% of Africans to mobile broadband connectivity; for comparison, the global average is 95%.

However, over 680 million people do not subscribe to mobile broadband services despite having coverage. The World Bank has estimated that another US$100 billion is needed to provide universal connectivity in Africa.
