All of this talk about need for energy to store more data is interesting. But I can't help but wonder if the next breakthrough isn't in reducing the amount of data being stored. Yes, I'm sure the picture of your muddy dog is valuable to you but how much will you pay to store such a well pixellated photo of it. I won't pay for it, so why is it stored for all eternity? At a cost even if that cost is smaller and smaller per pixel.

If energy costs are going up so much in order to store information which is irrelevant and unused, wouldn't the world be better off with less useless storage? The answer seems obvious, but the problem is how to reduce low value stored material. Isn't it?
