Well here in the Pacific Northwest we call them the Pineapple Express.

Warm moist air from around the tropics (Hawaiian Islands) become entrained in a jet stream then collide with cold air from the Gulf of Alaska or Arctic airmass sliding down from Canada.

Simply massive condensation!

Perfect recipe when they collide to produce prodigious amounts of rain up to very high altitudes.

So with lots of snow at higher elevations the melt runoff can be spectacular.

Look out below, especially in the valleys!

Flood time on steroids..
