You are not thinking this through and letting your emotions speak for you.

I used to do the same. For example, I used to believe that the punishment for rape should be execution, no excuses or exceptions. But then someone with legal practice experience pointed out to that should I get my way, most rapist will kill their victim to lower their chances of eventual execution.

There are always multiple considerations.

In this case, what does the society get for the big expenses of holding this guy for 20 years? He is a sicko. A normal person cannot be paid enough to do what he did. So you are not going to deter other sickos. What do you get for those expenses?
