"I would suggest the USA was in the height of it's economic power when it built the Panama Canal." Would you suggest that China peaked when it built the Great Wall? But, I digress; relative to the rest of the world, we economically peaked after WW2, when every other industrial country except Canada was pretty much destroyed.
