I have been asking this question myself. In the earlier posting
without going into the details, I was using a straight line
conservative number. Some analyst came up with a 18% figure
after the last quarterly report where he said actual EPS would
have been close to $1.00 last Q but for these deferred revenues.
But he failed to give explanation how he computed. I don't trust
these analysts numbers as much as I should (or probably I shouldn't)

Whatever it is, I am sure it is not net income. At best it is
EBT (earnings before taxes).

I will doubt if MSFT had close to 40% net margin.

Please shed any light that you can. I am curious.
