New Qualcomm VP Looks To Take On Motorola

Trying to explain why it had a wretched third quarter, Motorola
blamed a number of market conditions, including increasing
pressures in the cellular phone business.

If David McDowell, Qualcomm Inc.'s new vice president of sales
for the subscriber products group, has his way, that will become
a familiar refrain at Motorola.

"Ultimately, Motorola will be our number one competitor,"
McDowell told Telecom A.M.

Qualcomm is pinning much of its hopes for scaring Motorola on
its new QCT-1200 fixed wireless PCS phone, unveiled last month
and available now. "This is a huge deal for us," McDowell said.

While he expects the product to be only moderately successful in
the United States, McDowell said he's expecting huge sales in
China, Brazil and the Philippines. His goal is to sell over a
million phones next year.

And in three to four years, McDowell expects Qualcomm to have
"double-digit" market penetration in the cellular and PCS
portables market.

Qualcomm, based in San Diego, develops, manufactures, markets,
licenses and operates communications systems and products based
on its proprietary digital wireless technologies.
