Blood
After watching several duds in a row, I finally found a good one in this Irish drama, which consists of two seasons of six episodes, the first released in 2018 and the second in 2020. Mind you, if you are looking for something that is light and fluffy, look elsewhere – this a full on tragedy as we watch a family tear itself apart through lies, lust, poor decision making, and just plain bad luck. Although it features several techniques I rarely appreciate -- the first series has an unreliable narrator and features an extended flashback, and the second often jumps backward and forward in time -- the clever script made it work. I was never in doubt about exactly where we were in the story line.
The characters, even if they start out as a bit of a cliche like the mother-in-law, all become fully-fleshed and complex as the narrative moves along, meaning it is fortunate that they were able to attract a top notch cast, many of whom you will recognize from their roles in other British and Irish series. The direction is stylish and creative, unlike in any of the duds I recently watched, and the soundtrack and sound design deserve special mention. The only real criticism I have is of the last few minutes of the final episode, which seemed tacked on after the fact, but don’t let that dissuade you from seeking out this excellent series.
