Trump knows how to work a crowd. You can watch him throw out numbers, feeling for what the crowd wants to hear. That in particular stands out, but he does the same thing with phrases, nicknames and other concepts. However, that isn't the same thing as good political instincts. Because he really doesn't have a clue as to what resonates until he tries it out. He can quickly change directions, which his followers ignore if he can stumble onto red meat quickly enough, So his cultists thinks he tells truth to power, while others think he lies, dissembles and wanders off-topic because the red meat doesn't resonate and wipe out the nonsense.
