Way back zoo keepers used to try and feed gorillas a high meat diet because they were convinced that as a Great Ape and being close to humans they must surely need a lot of meat.

Oops, turns out they are nearly 100% vegan! Some of them like insects too. Once the zoo keepers figured out the correct diet, their captives got a lot healthier.

What is even more fascinating to me it that the % of meat in Chimp diets varies from one group to another, i.e. its a learned trait! Chimps are mostly vegetarian, but some groups have much higher meat consumption than others. Meat consumption is typically only a few % of their total diet.
