My view of the debate: There is no doubt that Trump lost the debate. He went off topic rambling about things that were not important, such as what went on during his campaign rallies, instead of focusing on the issues.

I do want to emphasize that Ronald Reagan did very poorly in his debates against Walter Mondale and still won by an electoral landslide.

Brenda tried her best to portray herself as being optimistic and a giver of light while exposing Trump as being dark and having a pessimistic vision of the USA. That will resonate if Americans are doing better now than they were four years ago.

The question that needs to be asked here is how will independents and swing voters respond to this debate? Are they better off now than they were 4
years ago?

If the answer is No, they will not vote for Brenda.

Bottom line: Trump did not have a good night. There is no way to get around that or rationalize it.

Did Trump self-destruct? No, he acted like vintage Donald Trump. He will not lose any of his supporters from this debate. The question is whether his debate performance will push some independents and swing voters toward Brenda. And that will ultimately depend on the 64 Million dollar question of whether independents and swing voters are better off now than 4 years ago.

I would be very careful to equate a good/bad debate performance with the outcome of the election.
