I am in no way begrudging anybody for still enjoying college football. Hobbies are a positive, healthy thing. This is just my opinion.

In my opinion, they have ruined college football.

What made college football appealing?

1. Tradition - By wrecking the conferences, they've ended the tradition of the game. It's gone. They've created an entirely new thing.

2. Regionalism, provincialism - In college football, a national championship always took a back seat to local rivalries. The most important things were beating your archrival, beating other regional rivals, and winning your conference. Now it's a thoroughly national game.

3. Amateurism - This has increasingly become a mockery in recent decades, but now the mask is totally off. The players are professionals.

4. Tribalism - The main appeal of all sports is tribalism. Our city against your city. Our school against your school. Our city against your city. With the transfer portal, players no longer have any loyalty to their team. They'll move on to greener pastures at the drop of a hat.

5. Suspenseful regular season - Even if college football's traditions were totally obliterated, it still had one huge advantage over the other major sports (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college basketball) - the regular season was suspenseful. Every loss was a killer. Every other sport drained the regular season of meaning by expanding its playoffs. Now college football has done the same.
