Granite Harbour

One of the things some European series do that I appreciate is to put our very short seasons, anywhere from two to four episodes. For one thing, it is not a big commitment of my time, as I hate abandoning a series before completing at least a season even if I am not impressed along the way.

The Scottish crime series Granite Harbour is a good example, with (so far) two seasons each comprised of three one-hour episodes. It is set in Aberdeen, where a former Jamaican military MP arrives to join a local squad of police detectives. No surprise, his personality and his approach cause some friction with his new workmates. The only real veteran in the cast is Dawn Steele (and her bangs – does she have a wrinkly forehead?) but the rest of the cast certainly hold their own.

Aberdeen is known as the Granite City, for the stone out of which most of it is built, and I thought the scripts did a pretty good job of immersing us in its ambience. However, I am still waiting for the iconic scene, when after its has been raining the sun emerges and causes the wet stones to glow, particularly if up against a background of dark clouds. (Yes, I was lucky enough to see it happen on my visit to Aberdeen.)

I quite enjoyed the first season, but the second did illustrate a problem that sometimes plagues this kind of series. There were way too many plot lines, probably enough to fill ten episodes. This in turn led to too many characters to properly keep track of. It could easily have lost at least two of the plot lines and associated characters, but I will still keep an eye out for another season if BBC decides to make one.
