We are up to Season 17 of "Taggart" with the endless grumpification of Jardine (and apparently his youthful demise in a few more episodes). Taggart himself was crusty and grumpy in a natural way, but they just make Jardine a jerk because he moved up a rank. Bad storytelling. I am hopeful that whoever replaces him takes a different tack. This idea that you have to be a jerk to succeed in British policing is trite on a good day.
