<..CIEN was down 15 in after hours as they guided estimates down due to slower spending by WCOM...>

We'll here the various interpretations/spins in the am, but I can tell you, if Sidgmore's petal to the metal fervor several weeks back was an accurate indication, this slowdown is strictly a function of vendor re-evaluation, regardless of how tactful/appreciative Sidgmore allows.

IE., read the wiggle room between the lines:
"CIENA has been and remains our DWDM supplier of choice," said John Sidgmore," [...until when? - "remains" is present tense... did NOT say "will CONTINUE to be"]

'While there may be a short-term slowdown in WorldCom's order rate to CIENA, WorldCom has not changed its commitment to being the bandwidth leader and intends to continue to aggressively provision the capacity afforded by CIENA's DWDM systems throughout our growing network," [..what committment has WCOM not changed?.. To CIEN, or to bandwidth?]

Of course, just MY take... sure they appreciate all CIEN has performed until now, but how could they NOT be at least seriously considering LU's 80?
