We have always been of the thinking that 2 dogs are better then one. Especially if both spouses work and the dog is left alone all day. Our dogs can occupy themselves for hours playing by themselves. They just seem happier having a running buddy around. (course we dont let them near the cabinets).

On flea control, there are two alternatives to collars (which are also highly toxic btw). One is a pill given once a month, which keeps the fleas off the skin. I'm sorry, I dont remember the name as we decided against this treatment. The other is a substance which is spread on the back of the dogs neck once a month callled Frontline Topspot. You apply an amount equal to the size of a quarter and the dog is protected all month for ticks, three months for fleas. (it is also available for cats)
