have been looking for several months for an explanation of "open interest". Your
answer to Jan indicates an UNDERSTANDING of the term.
Could you take a few minutes to give us a good description of the BASIC meaning of the
term and the implications of changes in the number? Thanks....BTW, I've even asked my
broker (18 years) and he didn't have an answer.

Dex,

Open interest is the amount of option contracts either long or short at a specific expiration date and strike price.

For example, if you bought 10 March 35 calls for Ascend, you have added 10 to the open interest for that strike and expiration. No one can reduce your 10 open interest contracts even if they wrote the calls in question. People are confused on this issue. You are long 10 contracts and that will remain 10 open interest contracts until you decide to sell your contracts to close.

Did I help???

Glenn
