Billions Of Dollars At Risk As Hurricane Approaches Coast

Story by Douglas McIntyre
• 9h

Tampa, and certainly the Panhandle region of Florida, are at risk of being hit by a hurricane. The last time a storm came ashore near Tampa, Hurricane Ida destroyed part of Port Myers. From a financial standpoint, it was one of the most costly hurricanes in history, with estimates of destruction as high as $100 billion if Tampa takes the brunt of the storm that could happen again.

100 Degree Water

This hurricane season was supposed to be one of the most destructive in history, both in terms of strength and number of storms. The reason was a warming Atlantic. The temperature got cooler in parts of the ocean, although water temperatures reached above 100 degrees F at the southern tip of Florida.

More Violent Storms

The season may “catch up” now, with weather fronts that could turn into hurricanes. What had turned calm has become violent again.
