Investor A,

I thought that the PII was targeted toward the 'real low' end, like the webtv market that is being touted so much! Remembering that 'box' is supposed to be available for $299 (or so) retail, (that's about $150 max wholesale!) I can't see much of a 'chip' being used there! Another place for the 'ultra dumb' chips would be in 'network' terminals used in reporting manufacturing from a plant floor. These systems don't require the power that we 'think' we need, but can be produced cheaply! Actually, IMHO, the PII is in competition with the older chips for embedded systems, where the 386's currently have been used.

I don't think that it is fair to say Intel has lost the technology 'push' when you look at the i740 video chip which has just been released! Intel is heavily involved with the development of Rambus, which will be the next high speed memory! I can't look at just the CPU portion, which I would have thought had reached the 'all it can do' level before now! I have been constantly intrigued with the enhancements that have migrated to the chip! The shrinkage of the traces, lowering of voltages in order to increase speed!

In talking to my friends, the technology in the 'wings' is really awesome!

Regards!

Ken
