Helene had a fast forward speed of 20mph. If its forward speed was 10mph or less it would have become a major CAT 5 with up to 200mph winds. That would have been a total catastrophy. The GOM has been prime for a major storm as high pressure had been sitting there for weeks on end.
I agree, people think that they can ride out a hurricane. Not smart as they can evacuate with days notice. Remember what I had told you about Sandy in 2012? How it caught so many by surprise with a 12 foot tidal surge that swept 2 miles inland taking so many souls to their death. I live inland and escaped yet just a 1/2 mile away a EF=2 tornado hit a housing development. I never saw anything so devastating.
