Intel to help out Samsung with capital expenditures?

S. Korea's Samsung Elec In Semicon Talks With Intel

Dow Jones Newswires -- February 19, 1998

SEOUL (Dow Jones)--South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. (Q.SSE) said Friday it is in talks with the U.S.'s Intel Corp. (INTC) on mutual cooperation in the semiconductor business.

The U.S. computer concern is considering plans to invest capital in Samsung Electronics' semiconductor operations in exchange for more stable dynamic random access memory chip supplies from the Korean company, Samsung Electronics said.

But Samsung Electronics, a major unit of conglomerate Samsung Group, denied the possibility that Intel may raise its stake in the company.

Currently, Intel holds a 10% stake in Samsung Electronics' U.S. subsidiary, Samsung Austin Semiconductor.

Shares of Samsung Electronics were up KRW1,600 to KRW87,500, on volume of 574,690 shares at 0415 GMT (11:15 p.m. EST).
