South Korean Stocks Jump

Date: 2/20/98

South Korean share prices soared while other
Asian indexes finished higher. Standard &
Poor's move to raise South Korea currency and
securities ratings pushed the index up 5.3%.
Indonesia's key index closed up 5% to 496.25
on currency- stabilization plans. Taiwan shares
closed higher to hit a five-month index high of
8,978.51. Hong Kong shares closed lower on
real estate concerns. The key Hang Seng index
slipped 0.8% to end at 10,581.27.

KOREAN PEACE OVERTURES:

North Korea appealed directly to dozens of
political leaders in rival South Korea, asking them
to help bring reconciliation to the divided Korean
peninsula. It was part of a marked shift in policy
and a remarkable peace overture by isolated North
Korea, which declared Wednesday it was ready to
talk with the South's newly elected government.
