Kris Kristofferson’s Rhodes scholarship meant about as much to him as a flea bite. Self-effacement was one of his many charms. About his voice, he rasped, “I sound like one uh them, whaddya callem? Mixmasters somebody dropped a fork into!” About his striking blue eyes set way back in his head, “Yeah, in school they used to call me ‘old no-eyes.’”
Kris embodied so many things – he was a Rhodes scholar, an Army man, a college athlete, a brilliant songwriter and engaging performer, a movie star/sex symbol. More than all of that there was his deep-rooted empathetic nature and abiding kindness.
Kris, you were a rare bird, and no one will replace you. Rest in peace, you devil you. We miss you already.
