Multiple studies have found strong correlations between smoking and a higher risk of mortality compared with never smoked.

A meta-analysis found a 1.32x higher risk of mortality, as well a 1.34x higher risk of more severe cases, for example. Cleveland Clinic, in JAMA Internal Medicine, found smoking correlated with a a higher number of hospitalization and ultimately, deaths.
The I'm pretty sure the consensus is that anything that wrecks your respiratory system on its own probably exacerbates Covid. And that would be consistent with the studies I've ever heard about.
