A new report has found that despite former President Donald Trump’s claims that he would release his medical records, the GOP presidential nominee has yet to do so.
The former president’s medical records have long been a point of contention amongst his critics, dating back to his first campaign for president in 2015, when he refused to release any medical information, instead publishing a four-paragraph letter from his personal doctor.
That letter said that if Trump were elected, he would be “the healthiest person ever elected to the presidency.”
However, the doctor who wrote the letter, Dr. Harold Bornstein, a gastroenterologist from Lenox Hospital in New York, later told CNN that it was actually Trump who dictated the letter.
“He dictated that whole letter. I didn’t write that letter,” Bornstein told CNN in 2018. “I just made it up as I went along.”
In August, Trump was asked about his medical records, telling CBS News that he would “very gladly” release them, though he has yet to do so.
Health and age have been at the forefront of voters’ minds throughout this election cycle, as many questioned the ability of President Joe Biden to serve a second term. Eventually, after a shaky debate performance in June, Biden dropped out of the race and was replaced by his vice president as the Democratic nominee.
With a suddenly much younger opponent, Trump saw the script flipped, as many have now started to wonder if he could face a similar outcome as Biden, being that if elected, he would become the oldest person to serve as president by the end of his presidency in January 2029.
According to a report from the New York Times, medical experts have shared that with Trump’s age comes an increased risk of several issues, including cardiac risk factors, cognitive decline, and potential aftereffects from the attempts on his life, to name a few.
A Morning Consult poll that was conducted in the days after Biden dropped out found that voters were becoming increasingly worried about Trump’s age. The poll highlighted that while he was running against Biden, 58% of voters saw Trump as being in “good health,” but in just two weeks against Harris, that number fell to 52%.
Additionally, 51% of voters surveyed said that Trump is now too old to run, compared to 44% who said that when he was facing Biden. For those who saw Trump as being mentally fit to run for office, the number fell from 53% to 48% as his opponent switched.
Despite requests to receive Trump’s medical records after he said he would release them, there has been no movement from Trump’s team.
When the Times reached out to Trump’s team directly, a spokeswoman referred them to a one-page letter from Trump’s former physician written a week after the assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The letter was written by the now Republican member of Congress Ronny Jackson, who described the bullet wound to his ear and healing progress. His medical history was not included.
