GM Energy announced it has expanded its portfolio of home energy management products with the PowerBank, a new modular energy storage system (ESS) that can transfer and store energy from the local grid and integrate with an EV owner’s home solar power system.
GM Energy is the home and commercial charging solutions arm spun out from Ultium Charge 360 two years ago. That business unit initially consisted of Ultium Home and Ultium Commercial. In the summer of 2023, GM Energy launched its initial portfolio of Ultium Home products, which consisted of three separate bundles complete with vehicle-to-home (V2H) charging capabilities.
This past May, GM Energy showed off the capabilities of its energy management products by powering an entire mansion using the products and a Chevy Silverado EV.
At the time, that bundle on display consisted of GM’s new bidirectional EV charger, called Powershift Charger, and the GM Energy V2H Enablement Kit, which includes an AC-DC inverter, Home Hub (the computer that manages loads through the house), and a dark start battery that provides a small amount of power as the system starts up and shifts from home to vehicle power.
If you had looked closely at the photos from that day, you may have noticed another product in the garage that appeared to be an energy storage system. Today, GM Energy has confirmed the new addition to its home product lineup, the PowerBank.

GM Energy introduces PowerBank, expands to all of US This morning, GM Energy announced it has successfully expanded its business to all 50 United States, giving EV owners nationwide access to its portfolio of energy management products, which now includes the PowerBank.
The GM Energy PowerBanks are available in two separate battery capacities—10.6 kWh and 17.7 kWh—and were designed to provide homeowners with backup power during an outage, like during a category five hurricane, or help offset higher electricity rates during peak demand.
The PowerBanks can also store free energy gathered from a home’s solar panels to help power a home or charge an EV with less dependence on the local grid. GM Energy’s trusted solar partner is Qmerit, which can handle site assessments, compatibility checks, and personalized quotes for interested customers.
Thanks to its modular design, two higher-capacity PowerBanks can be combined to offer 35.4kWh of stationary storage. According to GM Energy, that’s enough to power the average American home for up to 20 hours. GM Energy vice president Wade Sheffer spoke about the potential of the new PowerBanks:
One of the core differentiators of GM Energy’s portfolio is its modularity. The flexibility of our energy management tools, combined with one of the market’s largest lineups of vehicle-to-home-capable EVs, gives our customers more control over their energy use, helping to mitigate the impact of power outages, integrating renewable energy options and unlocking additional values.
The GM Energy PowerBank is one of the critical components in the company’s Energy Home System bundle, which also includes a GM Energy PowerShift charger and the GM Energy Vehicle-to-Home Enablement kit mentioned above. Customers who previously purchased the GM Energy V2H Bundle now have the option to add a new GM Energy PowerBank a la carte.
Like other GM Energy products, PowerBanks can be monitored and managed via any of the GM brand’s mobile apps. Interested consumers can learn more at the GM Energy Live website, where product specialists can share more detailed information via “an immersive digital experience.”
