Other than the fact it hasn't happened? Now it is true that things do get approved because they are perceived as being of general benefit. And it very well may be that when and if democracy finally collapses in the US that the cause is because of perceived benefit of a particular group or groups, but we aren't there yet. I suppose you can point to Russians voting for what they thought was the restoration of the Empire, but it isn't like democracy had more than a toehold. So losing what you don't actually have isn't that big of a deal.

My last shred of child-like faith is that even an ailing democracy can pull back from the abyss. It might take having the toes sticking out over the precipice, with pebbles and dirt cascading in a steady stream on either side, but that final step won't be taken.

A slender reed at best. But it is all I have left.

I used to fantasize at being a sunny optimist. What passes for that these days might otherwise be depressing.
