David, craig--thanks for following up. Since I have already revealed myself as knowing enough about technology to really fire up a good 2-3 minute discussion at a cocktail party, I'll have to go with Gilder on this. In other words craig, if big George thinks CIEN doesn't have the goods, I'm backing away even at 40. And here's something for you to noodle (which along with 20 cents will permit you to make a local phone call), here's how non-techie mike doyle makes tech stock decisions (at least in part): is company A directly or even indirectly in the cross-hairs of Microsoft (for example)? If the answer is yes, I don't care if George Gilder thinks Western Civilization depends on it--I'm outta there. See: Netscape. Everybody was trying to persuade me that AMD was a great buy as its stock kept falling through the basement. This techno-droid kept saying but what about Intel? No thanks, see 'ya. Now if CIEN is gonna have to go toe to toe with LU? Sorry not for me. TLAB has competition of course, as does every company, but they absolutely own digital cross connect and CSCO, LU ain't coming after them in that segment. That at least is how this chicken little view the high tech world: do not swim in the same pool with the great whites. End of sermon. Mike Doyle |
