There are several new medical schools in Ontario that have started or will start soon. The educational standards for these schools are much lower than for existing medical schools. Any four year Bachelor of Arts degree will be accepted. No specific requirements for math and science. However the graduates from this program can't apply for a residency at any other medical specialty.

There is some pushback from the Nurses Union. They make the case that Nurse Practitioners have the skills equivalent to these family practice only physicians. (They have a point)

This really doesn't have much to do with DEI. It is simply trying to reduce the huge shortage of family practice physicians.

There is a bit of DEI at existing medical schools. It doesn't affect the quality or capacity of the students. There are hundreds if not thousands of fully qualified applicants every year that don't get accepted at Canadian medical schools. I have some knowledge of this as a granddaughter graduated last year from one of Canada's top medical schools.
