Of all the could-have-beens.... Hayes finished building a custom modem/network box for Prodigy in early 1990. Think of it as a modem rack with a single token ring instead of lots of RS-232 ports. The token ring talked Prodigy proprietary protocols.

In April of 1990 I suggested turning that box into a general product by replacing the token ring with ethernet and adding TCP/IP terminal server functions. It would have been like the Telebit Netblazer, but with the modems built in. I did miss the digital modem angle, though.

I guess you can tell what Dennis thought of the idea -- I started work at Ascend (then Aria) about 6 weeks later.
