Oscar strengthens into a hurricane, packing winds of 80 mph Story by John Iz WPBF 25 First Warning meteorologists are tracking Hurricane Oscar, located less than 100 miles east of the Turks and Caicos Islands. "Maximum sustained winds based on aircraft data are near 80 mph, with higher gusts," according to the National Hurricane Center. "Some additional strengthening is possible today before gradual weakening begins early next week." A hurricane warning is in effect for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas. Hurricane Oscar has sustained winds of 80 mph and is moving west at 12 mph.
