And here is the Catch 22. Dell is doing extremely well. Let's assume that the models that do contain a built-in Zip are also doing well.

OEM Zips are, according to the last CC, sold at prices where there is little or no profit (or even a loss), and the tie ratios are much lower than retail Zips. The money is in the discs sold.

A great many people who order a Dell care very little about the Zip, and instead are more concerned with little things like how fast the CPU is, how big the hard drive is, and if it comes with a 3D graphics card, etc.

There are a host of different options on computers that interest a great many different people. I would guess most people, upon setting up their Dell, look at the Zip slot and ask, "What is that?"

And once they find out, couldn't care less.
