Richard Fernandez: That the alleged leak of Israeli attack plans occurred before the strike package was launched suggests the source wanted to abort the operation rather than ambush the attackers during its execution. Who would act in that way?

The exercise of a deniable veto over attack on Iran would force Israel to go it alone. This would not stop an attack from going forward but it would ensure that the form and scope of the attack would be a complete surprise to those who otherwise would have been forewarned.

Leaking your partner's secrets carries a price; and that is why partners don't betray each other more often. The loss of a strategic trust relationship is usually greater than any short term benefit you can obtain.

The value of honor, being a person of one's word, is poorly understood especially by people who never had any. It is not an abstract virtue but an operational asset in a world where someone must risk his life on the sole basis of a promise by someone else.

That is why they say "there is even honor among thieves". Thieves are not virtuous but they do understand that you either hang together or hang separately. It is quite something to fall short of this low bar.
