Intuit has based its success to date on listening harder and better than others to what customers really wanted. I work for Intuit, and though this is not an official position, I can be fairly confident in saying that the same principle will apply as far as customers' private data goes.

That is to say, Intuit will need to help customers make the most effective use of their personal information in whatever ways they want, while making it simple for them to understand and control this. Only this level of transparency will create and maintain the level of trust which, I like to think, a lot of Quicken users today have for the company.

In brief, Intuit will continue to be the consumer's advocate, and if they do that properly, I see no reason to suppose there'll be any kind of a consumer backlash.

CheckFree is a different case - it's not clear that they'll even have a direct relationship with consumers, still less the rights to do anything at all with the data.
