Also, a lot of the parts on Amazon a cheap knockoffs from China. This may be the case too but if you buy the house brands from the Autozone chains , you can be share that the parts are alright and fit.

With Amazon parts it a bit of a gamble as I found out. Again, this is not an issue if you are DIY and it’s non critical but for a mechanic it is a no no. The Autopart stores basically live of mechanics who need parts right away but want cheaper than OEM’s. OEM parts often have longer lead times.

I think Auto part stores will be around for a while. On the topic of EV, the EV are getting way more complex in terms of sensors, electrical parts and electronics. So the nature of the repairs will chain from mechanical parts to much more expensive electronic parts and I think Auto part can continue to thrive but need to change their supply chain to new needs.

It will also change the nature of a mechanic to more of an electronic specialist. Imagine you have self driving car ans your camera or radar sensor or worse control computer system breaks down. The car is now basically useless and you need to get it repaired. Diagnostics will be far more complex and repair very expensive. Will be interesting how this plays out but I am almost certain the the future won’t be cheap
